The first thing you do is take the cell phone away from her…. the second thing is call your phone provider and work out some kind of payment and hopefully they will reduce the bill for you…. third thing is have your granddaughter start paying back the bill and fourth, let this be a lesson for you, she is a child without brains and cannot be trusted.

I wish I had good news, but the problem is this, you voluntarily entered into a contract, used the device as it was intended and it performed as it was designed to do. THEY fulfilled their part of the contract. You now have an obligation to pay for the service to fulfill your part of the contract. After all it IS only fair. It is not the fault of the phone provider that your gtranddaughter exercised poor judgment. OK, so you have options after turning the phone OFF… 1: inform your granddaughter that SHE is responsible for payment. Maybe you can arrange a repayment plan where you cover the bill and she repays you in installments. 2: go to her parents, inform them, and request THEY cover the bill. 3: contact the provider and beg for mercy. Explain the situation. The provider MAY give you a break and reduce the bill by some amount. If they refuse, as after all they have no obligation to do so, having fulfilled their part of the contract completely, you should be able to negotiate a repayment plan. You may be charged late fees if you do not pay the balance in full, and maybe they will waive the late fees and penalties. My phone company (and my electric conpany) allows partial payments and adds a percentage (last I looked it was 1% for the phone, the electric allows a budget payment plan which equalizes the payment per month for the year so you over pay in summer and underpay in winter with no extra charges, but you have to ASK them for the plan in advance.) of the remaining amount as the penalty for late payment.

In essence, from the provider point of view, this is simply buyer’s remorse and you, the consumer, have no relief under the law. You are responsible for the bill. I am really sorry this lesson was learned the hard way. Unfortunately there are many people keeping you company in this misery. Many get bit by the bill every month. I have a friend who got a cell phone with all the bells and whistles, phone, video, internet, messaging, text messages, the works. And all went well for a month, but then his bill doubled, and then doubled again. At the end of the 4th month, he was up to $ 600. He got hit by overcharges for exceeding the limits per month. The problem is, the more he used it, the higher the charges, and the sooner each month he went into overtime charges. On his 4th month bill, 3/4ths was because of overlimit charges. At which time, he reverted to a land line as he had before. Fortunately, I learned by proxy and have never signed on for a cell phone. I could see myself easily getting hooked on the technology as happened to my friend and your granddaughter. The thing is, I can understand someone like a traveling sales person would have a clear use for a portable cell phone. Unless it involves business, I see no need for anyone else to actually have a NEED for one.
